Every recommendation on this site can affect a real, sometimes expensive, purchase decision. This page explains who works on Vigilant Coffee, how we research and score products, what our evidence labels actually mean, how we handle free or loaned equipment, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Who works on this site

Vigilant Coffee is written and maintained by a small editorial team. We don't publish invented author bios or attach fabricated credentials to a byline. Where a page has been reviewed by an outside specialist, technician, roaster, or working barista, we'll say so by name or role, with their permission, not before.

How we research and score products

Every product on this site is evaluated using published manufacturer specifications, documented warranty terms, and publicly available reviews and professional discussion from working baristas, roasters, and technicians. The exact category weights and reasoning behind every Vigilant Score are public and linked from each guide, not just the final number.

This is research-based evaluation, not laboratory testing. We say so plainly, on every page, rather than implying a level of first-hand verification we haven't done.

How we label our evidence

We use specific labels rather than letting every page read the same way, and we don't blur them:

• Research-based comparison — our default. Built from specifications, documentation, and publicly available owner and professional feedback.
• Manufacturer specifications only — used when independent owner feedback is thin, typically for newer or less common products.
• Hands-on tested — we've physically used the product ourselves and can speak to it directly.
• Long-term owned — used regularly over an extended period, not just a short test session.
• Used in a working café or cart — evaluated under real commercial volume and conditions.

As of this update, our hands-on testing program is not yet active, so you'll see "research-based comparison" and "manufacturer specifications only" across the site. When that changes for a given product, the page will say so, along with the date and what was actually done.

Free and loaned review units

We're open to manufacturers, retailers, and distributors providing review units, demo access, or loaner equipment as our testing program develops. If and when that happens, here's what we commit to:

• Any review or mention of a loaned, gifted, or discounted product will disclose that clearly, near the top of the coverage, not buried in a footnote.
• Receiving a product never guarantees positive coverage, a specific score, or coverage at all.
• Our Vigilant Score criteria and category weights are fixed before we evaluate a product. They are not adjusted afterward to fit the result.
• We'll state plainly what happened to any review unit afterward, returned, retained as ongoing business equipment, or otherwise, rather than leaving it ambiguous.

Corrections and updates

We get things wrong sometimes. Pricing changes, specifications get revised, a model gets discontinued. When we're notified of an error, or catch one ourselves, we correct it and note what changed.

• We do not change publish or update dates without an actual, substantive review of the content behind them.
• Major buying guides are reviewed periodically as new equipment comes to market. Pages that would otherwise need constant number-chasing are written to point to the original source instead.

Report an error

If you spot something wrong, a stale price, a discontinued product still listed as current, a spec that doesn't match the manufacturer's own documentation, we want to know. Email us at info@vigilantcoffee.com with the page and what you found, and we'll look into it.
