Best Filter Grinders

Last updated: August 22, 2026

Filter coffee, pour-over, drip, AeroPress, Chemex, is more forgiving of grind size than espresso, but less forgiving of grind consistency. Without pressure or crema to mask problems, unevenly sized particles (fines that over-extract alongside boulders that under-extract) show up directly as a muddy, unbalanced cup. That's why flat burrs, which tend to produce a tighter particle distribution than conical burrs at coarser settings, show up disproportionately often among dedicated filter grinders.

This is a shorter list than our espresso grinder guide, on purpose. Dedicated filter grinders are a smaller, more specialized category, and we'd rather show you three genuinely strong options than pad this out with marginal fits. Full write-ups and Vigilant Score detail for everything below live on our full grinder comparison page.

Best Starting Point

Baratza Encore

A 40mm conical burr grinder that's been the default recommendation for years, suitable primarily for filter and immersion brewing from drip through French press. It can grind finely, but buyers focused on dialing in non-pressurized espresso should look at the Encore ESP instead; parts and support are easy to find years down the line.

Niche Zero

Built around the same 63mm Mazzer conical burrs found in commercial grinders costing several times as much, in a compact single-dose design with virtually no retention. The reference point most other single-dose grinders get compared against.

Fellow Ode Gen 2

A 64mm flat burr grinder built exclusively for filter coffee, not espresso, using Fellow's own in-house Gen 2 Brew Burrs. Single-dose loading with auto-stop and retention consistently measured under half a gram. Fellow also sells the same grinder with optional SSP MP Red Speed burrs pre-installed for about $55 more, a separate configuration with its own price and grind profile.
